Pumas’ striker search goes on: who could join the Liga MX club?

Publicado el: September 8, 2025

The clock is ticking, and Pumas fans are growing increasingly anxious. September is here, and with just six days left in the transfer window, the long-awaited signing of a new striker remains unresolved. The sense of urgency is palpable, and supporters are desperate for answers.

Despite the front office’s tireless efforts to land their preferred forward, nothing has materialized so far. Recent rumors suggest the club is still looking toward Europe, having reportedly targeted several options. Yet, the situation around Ciudad Universitaria remains shrouded in mystery, with updates few and far between.

Several Pumas targets fall through

According to the latest reports, Pumas made contact with Andrea Belotti and Paco Alcácer. Unfortunately, both negotiations fell through. Belotti opted to stay in Italy after receiving a last-minute offer from Cagliari, while Alcácer thanked the club for their interest but stated his intention to retire from professional soccer. These developments were confirmed by transfer market expert César Luis Merlo.

Meanwhile, rumors suggest that the agent of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho offered him to Pumas. However, the club was never fully convinced he was the right fit. After becoming a free agent, Iheanacho ultimately signed with Celtic.

Cameroonian striker heading to Mexico?

Merlo also reports that Pumas still have two more forwards on their radar, though no names have been officially disclosed.

That said, one name is beginning to circulate elsewhere in the media: Vincent Aboubakar. According to 365Scores, the club has submitted a contract offer to the Cameroonian striker – one year with an option to extend – following the expiration of his deal with Hatayspor. A response is expected after the conclusion of the current FIFA international break.

For now, details remain scarce, but the possibility of signing Aboubakar is very much alive, especially given his free-agent status. The coming days will be critical for the Auriazules, as fans eagerly await the final piece of the puzzle for this tournament.
